Owning a Lexus is a long-term relationship, and routine service is what keeps that relationship running smoothly. Whether you’re driving a sedan, a hybrid crossover, or one of the new electrified models, the same questions tend to come up across our service drive in Woodland Hills, Tarzana, and the surrounding communities. We’ve gathered the most common ones below — answered straightforwardly so you know what to expect from your Lexus and from our service center.

How Often Should I Service My Lexus?

Lexus recommends servicing your vehicle every 5,000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first. This factory-recommended interval applies to most Lexus vehicles — including sedans, SUVs, hybrids, and electric models — though the specific services performed at each visit vary by mileage milestone.

Routine visits typically include an oil and filter change (for gasoline and hybrid models), a tire rotation, a multi-point inspection, and a fluid-level check. Major service milestones land at 15,000, 30,000, 45,000, 60,000, 75,000, and 90,000 miles, and these visits expand to include things like air filter replacement, brake fluid inspection, and more thorough diagnostic checks.

Your owner’s manual is the final word for your specific vehicle, especially if you drive under demanding conditions — frequent short trips, towing, dusty roads, or extreme heat. Drivers in Encino, Calabasas, and Reseda who do most of their miles in stop-and-go traffic should treat the 5,000-mile interval as a firm rule rather than a guideline.

Does the 3-Month / 3,000-Mile Oil Change Rule Still Apply?

No, the 3-month / 3,000-mile rule does not apply to modern Lexus vehicles. For Lexus vehicles using the 0W-20 synthetic oil specified for most current engines, the engine oil change interval extends to 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. Routine inspections and tire rotations still occur on the standard 5,000-mile / 6-month service interval.

The 3,000-mile rule dates back to the 1960s and 70s, when engines had looser tolerances and conventional motor oils broke down faster. Today’s engines are precision-built, and modern synthetic oils protect engine components over much longer intervals.

The exception is “special operating conditions” — frequent towing, off-road driving, repeated short trips under 32°F, or extensive idling. Under those conditions, Lexus recommends maintaining the 5,000-mile oil change interval regardless of oil type. Your vehicle’s onboard maintenance reminder system will also factor in your driving conditions and let you know when service is actually needed.

What Do the Warning Lights on My Dashboard Mean?

Dashboard warning lights signal your vehicle’s status by color: green or blue lights mean a system is active and require no action; yellow or amber lights mean a system needs attention but isn’t urgent; red lights indicate an immediate issue requiring you to pull over safely and contact service. Color is the first signal of urgency.

Modern Lexus vehicles include onboard diagnostic systems that constantly monitor engine performance, emissions, safety systems, and dozens of other vehicle subsystems. When something falls outside normal operating parameters, the system illuminates a dashboard warning light. The categories break down like this:

Light Color What It Means What to Do
Green / Blue A system is active or in use (cruise control engaged, headlights on, etc.) No action needed
Yellow / Amber A system needs attention but isn’t an emergency (low tire pressure, maintenance due, etc.) Address at your next opportunity
Red An urgent issue requiring immediate attention (low oil pressure, overheating, brake system fault) Pull over safely as soon as possible and contact service

The check engine light in particular is worth taking seriously even when the vehicle seems to be driving normally. It can indicate anything from a loose gas cap to a failing oxygen sensor or emissions component, and ignoring it can lead to larger problems and reduced vehicle efficiency.

Your dashboard alerts work alongside the scheduled maintenance plan in your owner’s manual — they don’t replace it. Routine service catches things like fluid degradation and tire wear that warning lights aren’t designed to detect.

If a light comes on, our service team can read the diagnostic codes and tell you exactly what the vehicle is reporting.

What Are the Urgent Warning Signs That I Shouldn’t Wait to Service?

Six warning signs mean your Lexus needs service right away: red dashboard warning lights; grinding, squealing, or knocking noises; changes in handling like loose steering or pulling to one side; visible fluid leaks under the vehicle; a noticeable drop in performance or EPA-estimated fuel economy; and a burning smell or visible smoke. Any of these indicate something that shouldn’t wait for the next scheduled appointment.

None of these guarantee a major problem, but all of them are signs the vehicle is telling you something. Here’s what each typically points to:

  • Red warning lights on the dashboard — particularly the brake system, oil pressure, charging system, or engine temperature warnings
  • Grinding, squealing, or knocking noises — especially from the brakes, engine, or suspension
  • Changes in handling — loose steering, the car pulling to one side, or unusually rough ride quality
  • Visible fluid leaks under the vehicle — oil, coolant, transmission fluid, or brake fluid
  • A noticeable drop in performance — rough idling, hesitation under acceleration, or a sudden change in EPA-estimated fuel economy that wasn’t there before
  • A burning smell or visible smoke from under the hood or from the brakes

Catching issues early is almost always less expensive — and safer — than waiting until something fails outright. If you notice any of these while driving in Woodland Hills, Tarzana, or anywhere else, it’s worth getting the vehicle looked at promptly.

How Is Service Different for Hybrid and Electric Lexus Models?

Hybrid Lexus models still need oil changes and follow the standard 5,000-mile / 6-month service schedule, with added inspections for the hybrid battery, inverter coolant, and regenerative braking system. Fully electric models (the Lexus RZ lineup) eliminate oil changes entirely and focus instead on battery diagnostics, brake fluid, tires, cabin air filters, coolant, and software updates.

Hybrid models (RX Hybrid, NX Hybrid, ES Hybrid, UX Hybrid, TX Hybrid, LX Hybrid) still have a gasoline engine, so they follow the standard Lexus service schedule — including oil changes, filter replacements, and fluid checks. The main differences are the additional hybrid-system components: the hybrid battery pack, inverter coolant system, and the regenerative braking system, all of which require periodic inspection.

Fully electric models (the Lexus RZ lineup) have a very different maintenance profile. Without an internal combustion engine, there’s no engine oil to change, no spark plugs, no exhaust system, and no transmission fluid service. Maintenance shifts to:

  • High-voltage battery diagnostics and thermal management system checks
  • Brake fluid replacement and pad/rotor inspection — regenerative braking dramatically reduces brake wear, so pads often last much longer than on a gas vehicle, but the brake system still needs periodic inspection
  • Tire rotations and alignment — EV battery packs add weight and instant torque, which can accelerate tire wear
  • Cabin air filter replacement
  • Coolant system inspection for the battery and inverter
  • Software updates, which Lexus delivers periodically and which can improve efficiency, refine system behavior, or add features

EV owners in Encino and Calabasas often see lower overall service frequency on the maintenance items they used to budget for, but the items that remain still matter. Our technicians are trained on all current Lexus electrified models.

What Does Lexus Service Typically Cost?

Lexus service cost varies based on your specific model, the service being performed, and your vehicle’s age and mileage. Routine maintenance like oil changes and tire rotations sits at the lower end of the range, while larger milestone services — like the 30,000- or 60,000-mile inspections — cost more because more work is being done. For an exact figure on your vehicle, request a quote from our service team.

A few things help keep service costs predictable:

  • Following the factory maintenance schedule. Small, scheduled services are almost always less expensive than the repairs that follow when something is neglected.
  • Using Lexus Complimentary Maintenance and LexusCare plans where applicable (see the next question).
  • Watching for service specials — we publish current offers and seasonal discounts on common services.
  • Using Service Now, Pay Over Time if a larger repair is needed and you’d prefer to spread the cost.

For a specific cost on a specific service, the most accurate answer comes from a quote — give our service team the year, model, and mileage of your Lexus and we can give you exact figures rather than ranges.

Why Should I Service My Lexus at the Dealership?

You should service your Lexus at a Lexus dealership for three core reasons: technicians trained and certified specifically on Lexus vehicles, genuine OEM parts designed for your exact model, and access to manufacturer-issued service campaigns and recall work that only authorized dealerships can perform. Independent shops can handle some general maintenance, but they don’t match those credentials.

At Lexus of Woodland Hills, you also get complimentary loaner vehicles so you’re not stuck waiting for service to finish. Beyond that:

  • Certified technicians trained specifically on Lexus vehicles. Lexus operates a tiered technician certification program — Certified, Senior, and Master — with requirements that include manufacturer training courses, ASE certifications, and years of in-dealership Lexus experience. Our team works on Lexus vehicles every day.
  • Genuine OEM parts designed for your specific model, rather than aftermarket parts that may or may not match factory specifications.
  • Warranty protection. Service performed by a Lexus dealer keeps records aligned with your warranty requirements.
  • Dealership amenities — our service center includes a tire center, express lane, complimentary loaner vehicles, and a collision center.
  • California Bureau of Automotive Repair Registration #267095, our state credential to perform automotive repairs.

For routine maintenance on a vehicle in or near its warranty period, factory-trained service is the safer call. For Lexus owners in Tarzana, Canoga Park, and Reseda, our service center is also a short drive away.

What’s Included With Lexus Complimentary Maintenance and LexusCare?

Lexus Complimentary Maintenance is included free with every new Lexus and covers the first two scheduled maintenance visits — at 6 months / 5,000 miles and 12 months / 10,000 miles, whichever comes first. LexusCare Service (also called Lexus Luxury Care) is a separate, optional prepaid plan that extends coverage beyond those first two visits to include milestone services at 15,000 through 90,000 miles.

Each complimentary visit typically includes an oil and filter change, tire rotation, multi-point inspection, and fluid-level checks at no cost to you. Learn more on our Complimentary Maintenance page.

LexusCare Service picks up after the Complimentary Maintenance period ends. It typically covers oil and filter changes, multi-point inspections, tire rotations, and major milestone services in the Lexus Scheduled Maintenance Log at 15,000, 30,000, 45,000, 60,000, 75,000, and 90,000 miles.

For L/Certified pre-owned Lexus vehicles, complimentary maintenance covers the next four factory-recommended services for 2 years or 20,000 miles, whichever comes first. A separate L/Certified Prepaid Maintenance Plan can be added for longer coverage.
